History
In the year of 1192, the duke of Babenberger Leopold V. decided to build up a very strong walled town in the southeastern Stonefield. For the construction of „Neuenstat“, they used a part of the ransom of the British King Richard the Lionheart.
Around the year 1200, they started to build the Romanesque church „Zu unserer Lieben Frau“, today the Cathedral of Wiener Neustadt. Also during the era of the Babenberger, the 4-tower castle in the southeastern corner of the town was constructed. In 1751, Maria Theresia founded a military academy in this castle, which still exists today.
